I’ve never quite understood the James Bond quote, “Shaken, never stirred.” Of course, in the literal context, it refers to the secret agent’s preference in the mixing of his cocktails. (By the way, Auntie Mame instructs the opposite: “Don’t shake; it bruises the gin.”). Even more confusing to me, however, is Bond’s comment taken in the figurative sense—and, with Bond, I’ve always prioritized the metaphorical . Such an in-control man would never be shaken, though occasionally he might find himself stirred (perhaps thanks to a Bond girl).
