Master artist Albrecht Dürer was born, lived and died in Nürnberg, Germany in the 15th and 16th centuries—though his great influence was felt throughout Europe, even during his lifetime. While he was an incredible painter, he is best known for his sensational printmaking which he sold while traveling throughout the continent and which made him famous (and financially comfortable). It is these surviving prints which, today, earns Dürer his place amongst the greatest of Renaissance artists. His distinctive style continues to inspire artists today.
