Throughout the worldwide Arts & Crafts movement, one of the defining characteristics of the style is the reliance on the crafted material to provide a significant portion of the work’s aesthetic appeal. On a copper plate, the hammered texture of the copper becomes the decoration. On an oak fireplace mantel, the wood’s grain provides the adornment. The tray shown above is a good example of this philosophy: the hammered copper and a simple, riveted brass edge provide all the decorative embellishment needed.
