This little Danish Skonvirke (Arts & Crafts) vase was made at the Hjorth ceramics studio (founded 1859) on the island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea. It is attributed to Thorvald Bindesbøll (1846-1908), Denmark's celebrated architect, ceramicist and industrial designer. The terracotta body is blackened during firing through an oxygen reduction process which draws black smoke into the pores of the clay (a process which Hjorth first embraced in the 1880's.)
