Handsome, pierced fretwork enlivens this brass and bronze Viennese fire screen made by David Hollenbach (1810-1871). Hollenbach operated a highly-regarded bronze foundry and fabricator in Vienna—producing his own items and executing the works of other important artist-designers (including metalworks for the ruling House of Habsburg, many Palais along the Vienna Ringstraße, and lighting fixtures in the Vienna State Opera House). Dated 1882, this piece slightly predates the Viennese Secessionist movement, though one can see early indications of the Art Nouveau aesthetic soon-to-emerge. The feet of one leg are slightly turned-in (see detail photo), though the screen stands flat and stable. Signed pieces by David Hollenbach are quite rare to the market.
