From post-war, Modernist Italy comes this large and impressive terracotta lion inspired after The Vigilant Lion guarding the tomb of Pope Clement XIII in Saint Peter's Basilica, Vatican City. The original lion was carved in travertine by Antonio Canova (1757-1822) in the late 18th Century. This handsomely-rendered lion is sculpted in terracotta and finished in a cool white glaze. A few small, discreet repairs (which I believe were executed at the time of production, by the ceramics studio) can be found; such large terracotta pieces are prone to fissures and other small flaws in the heat of the kiln. Because of the large size and delicacy of this piece (and the variables of delivery speed and distance), please call to discuss shipping: 917-446-4248. (12" x 22" x 7") sc13119h
