This Mid-Century Indian brass vase is hand-decorated in the traditional "nakkashi" manner. The classic, bulbous form is 14 inches tall, heavy and footed. The brass was first hand-etched (or chiseled), then hand-painted with an enamel-like finish—colorful contrast against the decorative, carved metalwork. While the brass could be polished, that would destroy decades of rich, hard-earned patination. It has been tested watertight. The previous owner told me that she received this vase as a wedding gift in 1965 and that it had been purchased at the Indian Pavillon at the 1964 World's Fair in New York City.
