A handsome and useful West German Modernist lidded ceramic canister by Ruscha (founded in 1948 in Rheinbach, Germany, about 25 miles South of Köln). It is beautifully crafted, including a "ground bottom" to create a perfectly flat base. The sensational finish is the work of glaze master Otto Gerharz—who developed the "Vulcano" glaze for Ruscha, the start of many organic, pumice-like dripping glazes (of which West German pottery is famous). Underglazed in chocolate brown, while frothy white and rusty red drip languorously down the sides of the vessel. (5" x 3.25") ap13107c
