Handsome, refined and useful, this Danish Art Nouveau covered urn is made of terracotta—slip-glazed and hand-painted with stylized botanical motifs. The palette of elegant colors will add a sophisticated touch to any mantelpiece or bookshelf. Consider using it as an urn for the remains of a beloved pet. Made by Hjorth (founded in 1859) on the Danish island of Bornholm. Ceramics workshops, such as Hjorth, often employed a staff of women to decorate their works—as ceramics decorating was considered a respectable and safe means of employment for women. Note the very small frit along the base (see detail photo). (7.75" x 4") ap13113c
