Welcome, Spring!

Lachanal French "Piece Unique" Lemon Yellow Vase with Butterscotch Gridwork (LEO Design)

Is there any season more invigorating—and more hopeful—than Spring?  Early green shoots begin to emerge from their bulbs, long forgotten below. Trees acquire a haze of yellow or light-green as buds begin to form along their twigs. And a frisson of delight passes through the body when one realizes, "Perhaps I don't have to wear a jacket today..."  Nighttime temperatures in the 20's notwithstanding, Spring is here—having arrived this morning, 20 March, at 5:37 am Eastern Time.

Despite my usual disinclination for yellow vases, I purchased this one the moment I found it. I loved the sophisticated hand-painting on the vase (reminiscent of a hand-wrought medieval gate). I loved the synergy of shape, texture and color, evocative of a giant Mediterranean lemon. And I have always prized the hand-crafted character of Lachanal vases, imperfect, and yet, sophisticated.  Though made in the early Twentieth Century, Lachanal pieces always convey (to me) the nature and spirit of ancient ceramics. This one transports me to a sunny terra-cotta terrace on the Mediterranean coast of France.
