Matte Green Ceramics

Weller Tall, Buttressed Cylindrical Arts & Crafts Vase with Incising and Matte Green Glazing (LEO Design)

Among the first Arts & Crafts antique pieces I purchased for my store was a piece of matte green ceramics.  It was an extra-large jardiniere and it sold right away—in the first couple of days of business.  Since then, I've had a particular fondness for matte green pottery.  It has such a wonderful, natural, organic look.  When displayed on wood, it is reminiscent of the leaves on a branch.  I find the color and the finish restful.

The tall vase, shown above, is a clear step-up from that first piece 29 years ago.  This was made by Weller in Zanesville, Ohio.  It has a sophisticated "buttressed" design—highly architectural—on an otherwise simple cylindrical form.  Incised flowers accent the top of the vase.  The matte green glazing is slightly curdled, especially at the bottom of the vase.
