Any Scrap of Hope . . .

Victorian English Brass Candlesticks (LEO Design)

Oh, these times in which we live!  So much is so depressing.  Or distressing.  Or heartbreaking.  One such (relatively minor) torment is the seemingly-endless cold which has settled upon us in the Northeast.  For too many days, temperatures have remained stubbornly below the freezing mark.  On several days, we haven't exceeded the Teens.

But, recently, I have begun to notice that the days have become noticeably longer—that is, the daylight has been disappearing ever later and later.   More light is certainly a sign of hope—as it always has been.

Shown above, a pair of Victorian English brass candlesticks, circa 1860's - 1880's.  This was a time when no homes had electricity.  And, while some homes may have had gas lighting from the 1840's or 1850's, this service was not universal—and not every room in a home might be plumbed for gas fixtures.  It's likely that these candlesticks were "the working technology" which brought light into many a darkened space.

These brass candlesticks have a wonderful "turned" effect—reminiscent of a balustrade or spindle.  The "knobs" along the shaft make the candlestick easier (and more secure) when carrying.  The "faceted" elements on the candlesticks also would help reflect more light—as it glints off the shiny brass texture provided by the many high-and-low elements.  Click on the photo above to learn more about this handsome (and useful) pair of candlesticks.
