The Dog Days of August - IV

Cast Brass Bird Dog with Verdigris Bronze Patina (LEO Design)

The "Dog Days of Summer" are upon us.  This year, they occur from 3 July through 11 August.  As we count-down the last four days of the season, we'd like to share some of our favorite canines, now in-stock at LEO Design.

Sirius—called "The Dog Star"—is the brightest star in the sky.  Astronomers have noted and tracked it for thousands of years.  They charted its annual appearance and movement through the skies and, eventually, began to anticipate when it should return .  Dies Caniculares ("The Dog Days") begins when Sirius makes its first appearance on the horizon at dawn (this year, 3 July).

By coincidence, this is the hottest time of the year (in the Northern Hemisphere).  Ancient Greeks and Romans began to associate Sirius with great heat, dangerous drought, and violent thunderstorms.  Early astronomers thought that the star itself actually brought the heat with it (which is not true).  Sirius also was blamed for lethargy, sickness, bad luck and madness in dogs.  The Ancient Egyptians acknowledged the heat and discomfort associated with Sirius, however, they looked-forward to the Dog Star.  When Sirius made its annual appearance, the Egyptians knew that the River Nile would soon begin its seasonal flood—bringing life-giving water to their crops, planted along the banks of the river.  The floods also replenished the nutrient-rich silt which made this little strip in the desert habitable.

Today the Dog Days are still hot and uncomfortable, however, the term now is used to refer to a time when business and other endeavors slow-down for a bit; a time when people relax, vacation, or stay in the shade, avoiding exertion in the heat.

Shown above, a handsome "bird dog" sculpture—a bit of outdoorsy charm for your desk, bookshelf or windowsill.  He is made of cast brass, finished with a bronze verdigris finish—with touches of red patina.  Click on the photo above to learn more about this handsome and loyal companion.
