Barley Twist

English Carved Oak Candle Stand with Barley Twist Shaft and Carved Base and Drip Plate (LEO Design)

The "Barley Twist" column is first referenced in ancient architectural history, specifically their use in Jerusalem's Temple of Solomon (which is why they are also known as "Solomonic Columns").  "Barley Twist" is the English name for the design, thanks to its resemblance to British barley candy twists which share a similar corkscrew shape.  Barley twist columns can be executed in wood, stone, bronze and other metals.

During the European Renaissance and Baroque periods—when many artistic conventions from the ancient world were revived—the barley twist became fashionable in architecture, furniture, sculpture and other decorative arts.  One of the finest (and boldest) examples of Baroque Solomonic columns are found supporting the bronze Baldacchino over the main altar in Saint Peter Basilica, Rome (which was placed over the tomb of Saint Peter).  The Baldacchino was designed by sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini between 1623-1634.

In wood, barley twists are carved on a lathe (after the spirals have been measured and marked-out with precision).  The woodworker carves-out the "troughs," leaving the "bines" standing proud.  After a rough-cutting, the spiral can be further carved or sanded to achieve the desired final effect.

The English candle stand, shown above, was made between 1890 and 1910.  At 34 inches tall, it has a confident presence.  A long barley twist shaft supports a carved "drip plate" and a handsomely-carved candle holder.  The weighty base is carved, too.  Click on the photo above to learn more about this handsome piece.
