I have the great, good fortune of having two parents in their Nineties. My father turns 90 today and I have made the 5,000 mile trek to Kauai, Hawaii, to celebrate the occasion with him (and my three brothers). Nothing pleases my father more than to have his four sons, their partners, and his four grandchildren gathered 'round a table. Considering that his parents never made it out of their Sixties, such a milestone is a blessing, indeed.
People often ask me, "How can you stand such a looooonnnnng flight? I would love to go to Hawaii, but I can't bear the thought of spending all that time in an airplane." I remind them that the first New Englanders to go to Hawaii sailed in a boat, rounded South America's treacherous Cape Horn, then continued across the Pacific. It took up to eight months and a good number of the passengers might die en route. In light of this history, our seventeen hour journey—door-to-door—was not so terrible. Mileage upgrades didn't hurt, either.

We always travel on United. Their hub in Denver seems the least congested of the choices—and the 7.5 hour United flight from Denver to Lihue is fitted with lie-flat seats. When traveling from Honolulu (on Oahu), we try to get the flight to Chicago (9.5 hours long, also with lie-flat seats).
