As inventive as every generation aims to be, sometimes the past just cannot be improved upon. Such is the case with Chinese ceramics design (whom the Western World had been trying to copy for centuries). Thus, ceramicists, in every place and time, pay occasional homage to the Chinese masters of the past—and their forms which have proved classically enduring.
The Pierrefonds French Art Nouveau vase, shown above, is of classic Chinese form. But the glaze treatment is all Art Nouveau. A steely blue-grey underglaze wears a cape of dripping, organic glazes on its high shoulders. Light crystals are encrusted along the shoulders while tendrils of glaze drip languorously down the sides of the vessel. Click on the photo above to learn more about this handsome piece.
