Spring Green - I

Arts & Crafts Jardiniere with Scrolling Shoulder Incising and Dappled, Matte Green Glaze (LEO Design)

Saint Patrick's Day has put me in a green mood.  That and my increasingly greening garden.  For the next several days, we'll be sharing some of our handsome green items—sure to put you in a vernal mood—all currently in-stock in the LEO Design on-line shop.

One of the first collections I assembled, in my first months after opening LEO Design in 1995, was a grouping of matte green Arts & Crafts pottery.  I barely knew what it was or how it fit within the history of decorative arts.  But I knew that I liked it.  And I still do.

Shown here, a most-handsome Arts & Crafts jardiniere.  Though I have not (yet) identified the maker, everything about it indicates quality.  The incised scrolling waves, lapping along the shoulder line, are clean and crisp.  The form is perfect.  And the sophisticated matte green glaze—wonderful to the touch—is dappled just enough to give the vase a sense of gentle energy.

Imagine a Spring azalea or a Summer palm emerging from the pot.  Cut hydrangeas would provide fresh abundance (use an interior glass sleeve); and a Bonsai tree would be perfectly-at-home.  I'll keep looking for the maker.  Click on the photo above to learn more about this very handsome piece.

More green to come—tomorrow and in the days to come.
