The King of the Jungle has been honored (lionized?) by mankind for millennia—in art, literature, culture and history. Lions truly are regal; people have long attempted to associate themselves with this majestic beast.
This pair of cast iron bookends, made in the Twenties, are handsome, indeed. This sculpted bas relief portrait of the feline was beautifully executed by Gregory Seymour Allen (1884-1934). The artist was born in Orange, New Jersey, and spent part of his work life in New York City. He is mostly remembered for his "historical" works, including political and military themes. Allen's bas relief sculpting graced numerous plaques, medallions and awards medals. And he was a talented Impressionist painter, drawing inspiration from the California landscape. Gregory Seymour Allen moved to Glendale, California, where he died in 1934.
