Is it me? Or is Summer somehow more . . . brutal . . . than I remember? Sure, we've all grown accustomed to the comforts of air conditioning. But this Summer has seemed continuously hotter and drier than the previous Summer (or the 50 Summers before that). In the past, the occasional summertime hot spell was interspersed with more moderate, sometimes cool-ish (and rainy), periods. Now it just seems always to be hot and dry. My little garden has been savaged. My tiny patch of grass is brown.
The Sun—that flaming, molten ball of fire in the sky—seems to be more threatening than ever. Climate change and man's damage to the atmosphere add greater alarm.
Over the next few days, we will be sharing some of our handsome art pottery vessels which are reminiscent of the molten surface of the Sun. All are currently in-stock at LEO Design.
Shown above, a "lobed," gourd-form English vase made in the Twenties or Thirties by Pilkington Royal Lancastrian. The complex, organic glazing is a combination of yellow and vermillion—curdled under the heat of firing in the kiln. The different glaze colors seem to have behaved differently in the kiln—creating the swirling, molten appearance of the vase you see. Click on the photo above to learn more about this handsome vase.
