Depending on which side of the sales counter you occupy, the well-worn term "Black Friday" may excite you or fill you with dread. In recent decades, the term has referred to the day after Thanksgiving—the "official start" of the Holiday shopping season. It's the day when a merchant's profit ledger will (hopefully) switch from red ink to black ink. Optimistically, ten-and-a-half months of losses would be reversed by a surge of motivated Holiday shoppers.
