We welcome, March. And we welcome your flower, the Daffodil—surely a most-welcome sign of a pending Spring!
Daffodils are part of the Narcissus genus which are members of the Amaryllis family. They first grew some 33 million years ago, on the Iberian peninsula, from which they spread throughout Southwestern Europe and into North Africa. They became very popular in Europe in the 1500's and were extensively developed in the Netherlands shortly thereafter. Thousands of "cultivars" were developed through selective breeding. Long known to be poisonous (thus, deer won't eat them), they have been used medicinally since ancient times. Today, they are being studied as a possible treatment for Alzheimer's Dementia. But please be careful; their chemical components can have dangerous effects if ingested improperly.
The vase above is sunny and bright—much like a Springtime daffodil. It was made in the Thirties by Stangl in Flemington, New Jersey. The bright, high-glazed finish is bold, like a daffodil, and the vase would look wonderful supporting a small handful of the optimistic blossoms.
