The Ukrainian flag flies bright and crisp—a clear blue sky over a golden wheat field. Today is Independence Day of Ukraine and it commemorates the country’s Declaration of Independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Celebrations are held throughout Ukraine, as well as in Brussels (capital of the European Union), Chicago, and (sometimes) in Russia. Last year the “Ukrainian Youth Club” in Moscow held “flash mob” events in the capital city, demonstrating Ukrainian cultural pride and independence. Let’s hope that this year’s events are peaceful, prideful, and appreciated.
