Summer First

Pilkington English Art Deco Broad-Shouldered Vase with Organic Mottled Orange and Dripping Yellow Glazing (LEO Design)

Today, at 4:50 pm, Summer will have officially begun.  Today is also the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year—that is, in the Northern Hemisphere.  It's the shortest day of the year in the Southern Hemisphere.  As every schoolchild learns, the Earth spins on a vertical axis, an axis which tilts back-and-forth over the course of the year.  On the day of the Summer Solstice, the North Pole (that is, the Northern axis), is tipped as close to the Sun as it will get.  Thus, today, the Northern Hemisphere is receiving maximum Sun exposure (and the maximum number of hours of sunlight).  Starting tomorrow, the axis will begin to slowly tip-back, away from the Sun, and the days' periods of sunlight will become increasingly shorter.

The sunny English Art Deco vase, shown above, is dressed like the molten Sun: a blend of organic, dripping yellow over a mottled orange glazing.  It was made by Pilkington Royal Lancastrian in the Twenties.  Click on the photo above to learn more about it.
