During the Art Nouveau (and Arts & Crafts) period, there was a premium placed on the craftsmanship—not simply on the sum value of the materials used. As such, good Arts & Crafts objets express a pleasing aesthetic and reflect a skilled artisan’s talent. Shown above, a pair of English “artglass” cufflinks with matching stickpin, made around 1920. Though jewelry is typically judged by the value of its stones, in this case, the “stones” are simply shaped and polished slag glass cabochons—artfully executed.
