International Children’s Book Day

Bronze-Clad Spanish Armada Sailing Ship Bookends (LEO Design)

Today is Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday—as well as International Children’s Book Day. Begun in 1967, the day is dedicated to promoting books and reading amongst young people. Each year a different country is asked to “host” the celebration;  that country picks a theme, organizes events, and selects a local author and illustrator (who designs that year’s event poster).  Worldwide, writing competitions are held, awards given, and readings sponsored.

The bookends pictured above, made in the 1920’s, may spawn ideas of travel and adventure in a young reader’s mind.  At the very least they will hold-up a child’s book collection with style.
