Fly Me to the Moon

Pilkington Royal Lancastrian English "Moon Vase" with Sculpted Swirls (LEO Design)

This afternoon, at 6:35 pm Eastern Time, NASA will launch the Orion Integrity rocket into space as part of the Artemis II moon mission.  The crew of four will encircle the moon—nearly 57 years after American astronauts actually landed on the Moon's surface in 1969. This "flyby" mission will launch from the NASA Kennedy Space Center in Florida.  Ten days later, the capsule (containing the crew) is scheduled to splash-down in the Pacific Ocean.

There will be four astronauts aboard, including a Black man, a woman and a Canadian—a delightful surprise given the tenor of the times.  These four individuals will set a new record for traveling farther from Earth than any other human has in history, over 250,000 miles as the crow flies.  Their total traveled mileage will be in the 700,000 mile range.

This Artemis II voyage is a precursor to the Artemis III expedition which intends to land on the Moon's surface in 2028.  The successful execution of this trip—as expensive as it is—will provide scientists with new and important data.  It will also be a bright light of accomplishment for a nation desperate for any good news.

This English late Arts & Crafts rose bowl, shown above, boasts a dramatic, swirling surface—finished in a craquelled Moon grey glaze.  It is reminiscent of the silvery orb which circles our planet.  It was made in England by Pilkington Royal Lancastrian in the Twenties or Thirties.  It is a stunning statement piece for any mantel, bookcase or tabletop.  Click on the photo above to learn more about it.
