I love letter racks! Perhaps it’s my ambition to impose organization upon my desk . . . someday. Perhaps I like the combination of antique style and present-day practicality. Or, perhaps, I just like possessing the relic of an imagined, distant, more-orderly time.
Shown above: a Nineteenth Century Victorian American letter rack with a sphere of coiled steel, clutched within the talons of an eagle. While the raptor’s clench might have been executed with a self-righteously domineering sensibility, instead there’s a handsome and stylish elegance to the piece—perhaps it’s the smooth, graduated green spiral of the letter-holding device.
