Nice "things"—Handsome Gifts—do not have to be expensive (though sometimes they are). This bronze bison, sculpted in Canada, is heavy, handsome and full of character. (And he's not too expensive.) Perhaps your dad loves "The Olde West." Maybe he comes from The Old West. Or, maybe he just likes bison.
Which brings-up an interesting question: is there a difference between a bison and a buffalo? Yes there is! A big difference!
The creatures sometimes (inaccurately) called the "American Buffalo" (like the bronze sculpture shown here) are not "buffalo" at all. They are "bison" (scientific name: Bison bison). They were found across the open grasslands of North America. An overseas relative, the "European Wood Bison" (Bison bonasus), lives across the Atlantic. They once ranged from the French Pyrenees to the Russian Caucuses. Both varieties have enormous shoulder humps, short, sharp horns, thick, shaggy coats, and prominent "beards." They are aggressive, unpredictable and not suited to domestication (though some ranchers have managed to breed them commercially).
True buffalo, on the other hand, live in Africa (Syncerus caffer) and Asia (Bulbalus arnee). These animals have a more cow-like head, live in warmer climates, and usually live near bodies of water where they may wade and cool themselves. These buffalo are more docile and potentially domesticated for use as beasts of burden
