Over the last several days, we've been sharing some of our favorite Back-to-School ideas. To be frank, we don't support the trending "competitive overkill" for best-decorated dorm room. So, perhaps, some of these gift ideas would be better suited to the graduating scholar. Nevertheless, all of the items are handsome and useful additions to an office or den (or dorm room).
Shown above, an Art Nouveau "sliding" bookrack made by Judd (Wallingford, CT) in the 1910's. A spray of pine is framed by energetic "whiplash" surrounds. This bookrack is meant to sit on a desk or credenza, where it can expand (from 13.5" to 24") to hold a small collection of books, kept near-at-hand. In early days, personal libraries were the privilege of the wealthiest. A middle class person—perhaps a shopkeeper or businessman—might have a small handful of books: a Bible, some poetry, some reference books. Such a bookrack would be perfect for just such a focused assortment. Please click on the photo above to learn more about this handsome desk accessory.
