Today I am no longer an "official" student. But I live half-a-block from the University of Pittsburgh campus and have an unobstructed view of the seasonal tide of students—flowing-in and flowing-out. In late August the minivans, with their out-of-state license plates, make their anxious arrivals. Canvas "PITT" trolley/carts rattle along the sidewalk as frantic parents argue over parking stresses while their embarrassed 18-year-olds process the conflict: will I be happy or sad to see my parents drive away? For both sides of the equation, it is a big (and emotional) milestone.
I made myself very busy in college, requiring strict time management. I couldn't have made it without my "week-at-a-glance" planner. I also had a system of managing my "desk stuff"—though nothing as elegant as the Edwardian English stationery stand, shown above. It is fashioned of oak, made around 1905. Few students stock writing paper or stationery anymore. And does anyone still buy "filler paper"? But business cards and index note cards still have a use—and "syllabi" might still be printed-out (now and then). I'm fairly certain that paper "food delivery menus" will never go away. This stationery stand would also be a good place for stashing one's mobile phone and iPad, ready for a quick exit. Click on the photo above to learn more about it.
