A New Shipment from Europe – part I

Steuler West German Vase with Foamy Blue and Brown Glazing (LEO Design)

We’ve just received another large shipment—mostly art pottery—this time from Continental Europe.  Over the next few days, we’ll be sharing with you select pieces from this newly-acquired collection.

Shown above, a most-handsome piece by Steuler.  A “foamy” highly-textured light blue glaze drips down over a metallic gunmetal underglaze.

Founded in 1917, Steuler operated in the Hohr-Grenzhausen region of West-Central Germany.  This region, half-way between Frankfurt and Cologne, was a center of German ceramics production—home to many pottery workshops and ceramics trade schools.  The area was given the nickname Kannenbäckerstadt or “Jug-Baking Town” and the region’s coat-of-arms is a chevron depicting three ceramic jugs.

More newly-acquired art pottery tomorrow.
