A German Collection Acquired – part IV

Collection of Carstens Atelier "Prehistoric" Vases (LEO Design)

This week we share selections from a newly-arrived collection, purchased from an accomplished New York collector.  Pictured above, a grouping of four “abstract tribal” pieces, made by Carstens for their upscale Atelier line in Freden an der Leine, West Germany ($245 – $375). In a rather tongue-in-cheek fashion, the ceramicist captures the goofy seriousness of 1970’s Modernist art pottery—which begs the question, “what source inspired the artist?”  Perhaps African sculpture?  Perhaps Aztec stone carving? Perhaps Flintstone’s illustration?

More from our recently-acquired New York collection tomorrow.
