Long Live the Queen!

English Print of Queen Victoria by Sir William Nicholson, RA (LEO Design)

On this day in 1896, Queen Victoria became the longest-reigning monarch in British history—surpassing her grandfather, George III, who held the title until this time.  And Victoria still had four and a half years to live!  Victoria maintained this distinction until 9 September 2015, when today's monarch, Elizabeth II, assumed the title "Longest Reigning British Monarch."

The portrait of a mature Victoria, pictured above, was created in 1901—the year of her death—by British artist Sir William Nicholson, R.A.
